Well, what can we gain from this mess of numbers? This is a super bold prediction on my part, but I'll go out on a limb anyway. I THINK SUPERCONTEST CONTESTANTS GO SUB-50% FOR THE 2ND WEEK IN A ROW!
Here's why:
The consensus Top 5, or the teams whose spreads got hit the hardest in the SuperContest in Week 2, in order, are Baltimore, Dallas, San Francisco, New England, and Atlanta. All of these teams covered their spreads with ease in Week 1. Don't you think Vegas knows this just as well as everyone else? Don't you think Vegas knows people are going to want to hit these teams hard? Don't you think Vegas factors this into their lines?
But Dana, 3 of your 5 picks are in the consensus Top 5. So what are you saying? I'm saying I THINK 3 of the consensus Top 5 DO NOT cover this week, but I HOPE a certain 3 of them DO cover this week. If you can't figure out which three, I'll have Tommy come hit you on the head with a tackhammer because you are a RETARD!
Let me break down a couple consensus Top 5 games the way I see them.
Ravens @ Eagles
Willy Walrus may want to write a letter to the editor after this explanation. I'll apologize in advance, Willy. In my opinion, the Ravens played a near perfect game last Monday in front of everyone's eyes, crushing a respectable Bengals team. The Eagles played absolutely awful last week, squeaking out a 1-point victory against a bad Browns team. Yet, Vegas is essentially saying the Ravens are just a hair better than the Eagles by setting this line at 2.5. VEGAS WANTS PEOPLE TO TAKE THE RAVENS! They saw what everyone else saw last week. IT'S 1 WEEK, PEOPLE! You cannot put too much stock into 1 week. The Eagles are a very solid team, and you're right to think they should win this game by 3 or more points AT HOME.
Cardinals @ Patriots
This line was or is 15 a lot of places. I think once it dipped below 14 a ton of people got fire in their eyes and drool on their lips. The truth is: 13.5 points is A LOT to cover in the NFL, but if there's 1 guy/team I want trying to do it, it's Tom Brady and the Patriots. Belichick has shown he's unafraid of running up the score on any team. For THE BISNESS's sake, let's hope the Pats score first and score often. A backdoor cover is always in the mix when trying to cover such a high spread.
Let's take a look at the picks of some of the big names in the contest. After listening to one of the B.S. Report podcasts this week, I found out Cousin Sal (Sal Lacono) joined the SuperContest this year and is participating under the alias "TEAM WHODID." It's refreshing to see someone with a winning record on the list. Hopefully THE BISNESS will join him after Week 2.
TEAM WHODID., 4, 1, 0, NE, CAR, CIN, NYJ, ATL
NOW 100% SWEAT FREE., 2, 3, 0, MIN, KC, OAK, SEA, STL
FEZZIK ., 1, 4, 0, MIN, KC, PHI, JAX, ATL
SIMBOTICS ., 1, 4, 0, MIN, BAL, NYJ, SF, ATL
Well, it looks like the majority of these guys agree with Herby, and there's only 1 pick that goes against THEBISNESS's picks, Fezzik's Philly pick. I'm not saying these facts are good or bad. In 15 hours, we'll find out.
Note: There's 6 Home underdogs in Week 2: Rams, Seahawks, Jaguars, Dolphins, Colts, Panthers - How many do you suppose will cover?
It's about 10 minutes until National Football Day...Toodaloo, sports fans!
